With cyber attacks and AI-generated threats on the rise, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is taking steps to secure its digital and surveillance infrastructure. The BMRCL has recently floated a tender to establish a state-of-the-art Security Operations Centre (SOC) at Baiyappanahalli to monitor and protect its IT and CCTV networks.

Officials said the SOC will serve as a central command hub that continuously monitors, detects, and responds to both cyber and physical security threats. It will integrate BMRCL’s IT systems and CCTV surveillance under one roof, ensuring 24x7 protection throughout the year.

“The objective is to monitor, prevent, assess, detect, and respond to potential cyberattacks and system vulnerabilities. The centre will maintain round-the-clock surveillance, ensuring uninterrupted operation of the entire CCTV network and Network Operations Centre (NOC),” a senior BMRCL official told The Hindu.

Multi-level security

According to BMRCL, the SOC will be equipped with AI-driven tools and manned by multi-level security analysts who will work in shifts to ensure constant vigilance. It will provide full visibility of BMRCL’s vast network, which spans 83 metro stations and covers the Purple, Green, and Yellow lines.

The tender documents highlights the key functions of the SOC to include detecting and responding to cyber threats, managing security incidents, monitoring and analysing IT and CCTV data, conducting forensic investigations, identifying vulnerabilities and malware, and integrating real-time threat intelligence.

Centre to be future expandable

“In simpler terms, the SOC will act as a digital “control room” where experts will use intelligent software to identify suspicious activity, isolate affected systems, and remove malicious programmes before they cause damage. The system will use multiple methods such as pattern recognition and behavioural analysis to spot potential threats,” an official explained.

The Baiyappanahalli facility will include essential infrastructure such as server racks, Power Distribution Units (PDUs), workstations, LED display panels, and specialised software platforms. It will also be designed to allow future expansion of the centre as technology advances.

“This initiative is a major step towards safeguarding Namma Metro’s digital backbone, ensuring both passengers’ safety and the reliability of the growing technology ecosystem,” the official added.
