11 FIRs have been registered over unnatural death after 11 people died and several were injured in a stampede outside Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Wednesday, during an event to felicitate the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team after their maiden IPL title win.
The event, organised by the Karnataka State Cricket Association, turned into a tragedy after an overwhelming crowd appeared outside the Bengaluru Stadium. Free passes, overcrowding and limited seats at the stadium resulted in the deadly situation.
The chaos turned into a stampede as several cricket enthusiasts who did not have entry tickets to the stadium tried to swarm into the premises along with those who had valid tickets.
Karnataka Govt Announces Compensation
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Wednesday offered an apology after 11 people were killed following RCB’s victory celebrations.
“This should not have happened and we never expected such a big crowd. The stadium’s capacity is 35,000, but more than 3 lakh people were there. Gates (of the stadium) have been broken. We apologise for this incident. We want to know the facts and give a clear message," he added.
Meanwhile, the Karnataka government has announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the families of the deceased killed in the stampede. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated the government would also provide free treatment to the injured.
President Murmu, PM Modi Extends Condolences
President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi also on Wednesday condoled the Bengaluru stampede deaths. President Droupadi Murmu said, “The loss of lives in the tragic happening at a stadium in Bengaluru is shocking and heartbreaking. My condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured."
Prime Minister Modi described the stampede in Bengaluru during the victory celebrations of Royal Challengers Bangalore’s IPL triumph as “absolutely heartrending".
