Stampede in Bengaluru: At least 11 people died and 47 others injured after a stampede broke out at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Wednesday, where crowds had gathered to celebrate Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) IPL victory. It was three hours of complete chaos in Bengaluru as authorities kept changing statements on whether the RCB victory parade in Bengaluru was happening or not.
Fans, who wanted to celebrate with their team after having waited for 18 years to win the title, were left vying for air as lakhs gathered outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium, that has a capacity of 32,000 people.
It all started with RCB announcing the victory parade in a social media post on Wednesday morning. What followed was a day of complete chaos with back and forth on the status of the parade, confusion over whether tickets were needed, lack of proper information, rescheduling and a stampede that took 11 lives and injured 47 others.
Bengaluru Stampede: Timeline Of Events On June 4
- At 7:00 AM, RCB posted its first tweet announcing a Victory Parade at 5:00 PM on June 4, starting from Vidhana Soudha and ending at M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
- At 2:00 PM, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara told media the parade is cancelled for security reasons, even though police have made traffic and crowd arrangements “in case it happens."
- At 3:00 PM, despite confusion, large crowds began assembling outside the Chinnaswamy stadium. One major road stretch outside the stadium was completely blocked by people. Thousands of fans were already in place, expecting the parade to start soon.
- At 3:14 PM, RCB posted a second tweet, reconfirming that the Victory Parade will happen at 5:00 PM.
- At 4:40 PM, the crowd began to lose control at multiple stadium gates as fans surged forward. Entry points became chokeholds and lack of barricades and control lead to a stampede. Several people fell and were trampled in the rush.
- From 5:00 PM, chaos continued as emergency responders tried to reach victims. Videos from outside the stadium showed people who had gathered, picking up the injured themselves and taking them to safety.
What Went Wrong
Conflicting Communication: The contradictory announcements from RCB and the state authorities created confusion among fans, many of whom were unaware of the parade’s cancellation.
Overcrowding: The crowd that gathered for the event far exceeded the stadium’s capacity and the organisers’ expectations.
Inadequate Crowd Control: The lack of sufficient security personnel and crowd management measures failed to handle the massive turnout, leading to uncontrolled surges.
Limited Access Points: Fans were funneled through a small number of gates, which became choke points and contributed to the stampede.
Explaining what exactly led to the chaos and stampede, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said, “The match happened last evening (Tuesday) and today this event was organised by the cricket association, so no one had expected that so many people would come. The expectation was the equivalent number of people for the stadium’s capacity or slightly more than that may gather."
“There are small gates. The people entered through the gates. They have also broken the gates, so a stampede has taken place. Nobody had expected so much of a crowd to come. Prima facie, it looks like that. I’m not saying nothing has happened. The inquiry will bring out facts," he added.
A total of 11 FIRs have been filed in the Bengaluru stampede case for unnatural deaths.
