Bengaluru’s Metro story has mostly stayed within city limits, tackling commutes between neighbourhoods, IT corridors, and expanding suburbs. Now, a new chapter is taking shape that could push Namma Metro beyond Bengaluru for the first time.

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited has finalised the tender to prepare the Detailed Project Report for extending the Green Line from Madavara to Tumakuru, a move that would create Karnataka’s first inter district Metro line.

While this is not the start of construction, it is an important planning milestone. A DPR is the document that decides whether a project is technically possible, financially viable, and worth taking to the next approval stage.

Tender Awarded and Cost

BMRCL has awarded the DPR preparation contract to R V Engineering Consultants Ltd. The value of the contract is Rs 1.26 crore. This consultant will be responsible for preparing the full project blueprint that BMRCL can submit for government approvals and funding decisions.

As per the tender conditions, the agency must complete and submit the DPR to BMRCL within 5 months. That timeline matters because it sets the pace for everything that follows. Until the DPR is ready, route options remain preliminary and no final decision can be made on alignments, station locations, or cost estimates.

Route Length and Key Corridor

The proposed extension is expected to cover 59.60 km, stretching from Madavara to Tumakuru. The initial corridor mentioned in planning discussions indicates the route may pass through Madavara, Nelamangala, and Dabaspet before reaching Tumakuru. These nodes are important because they sit along the Bengaluru Tumakuru growth belt, with a mix of residential expansion, highway traffic pressure, and industrial activity.

If this alignment is confirmed later, it could reframe the daily commute options for people living in and around these towns, and reshape how the Bengaluru Tumakuru highway corridor functions.

What the DPR Will Study

BMRCL has indicated that the DPR will not be a simple paperwork formality. It will involve a comprehensive study of multiple route alignment options and the realities on the ground. The consultant will carry out geotechnical and local field surveys, which help determine soil conditions and construction constraints. This is crucial for deciding whether sections can be elevated, at grade, or require special engineering solutions.

The DPR scope also includes environmental impact assessment, which looks at how the line could affect local ecology, land use, and surrounding settlements. Alongside this, the consultant must evaluate technical feasibility and financial viability to identify the most efficient and realistic design.

In practical terms, this work decides whether the project is affordable, where it should run, and what trade-offs will be required.

What This Means for the Green Line

Currently, the Green Line runs 33.46 km with 31 stations, connecting Silk Institute to Madavara. The Tumakuru extension would take the Metro beyond Bengaluru’s city boundary for the first time. That is why it is being framed as an inter-district Metro, not just an internal network expansion.

For commuters, this is about creating a smoother transit alternative between Bengaluru and Tumakuru. It also targets the heavy dependence on road transport on the Bengaluru Tumakuru highway, which carries dense traffic from private vehicles, buses, and freight movement daily.

What Happens After the DPR

Once the consultant submits the DPR, BMRCL will forward it to the Union Government for approval. The project can move toward implementation only after the Centre provides its nod. Funding structure and timelines will be shaped by that approval process, which typically includes cost scrutiny, ridership projections, and feasibility checks.

Economic and Social Impact Claimed

Beyond passenger convenience, the proposed Metro link is expected to support economic growth in Tumakuru district by improving access and encouraging industrial development, trade, and tourism. Planners also see it as a decongestion tool for Bengaluru over the long term, since better connectivity can strengthen satellite towns and outskirts, reducing pressure on the city core as population and housing demand expand outward.

For now, the project remains at the planning stage. But with the DPR tender finalised, the inter district Metro idea is no longer just a headline. It is on the track, one document at a time.
