A day after the car blast near Delhi’s Red Fort that claimed 12 lives, the Supreme Court on Tuesday denied bail to an accused booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in an unrelated case.

According to Bar and Bench, during the hearing, Senior Advocate Siddhartha Dave, appearing for the accused, remarked, “Not the best morning to argue this case after the events of yesterday."

However, a Bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta responded, “Best morning to send a message."

When the court noted that inflammatory material had been recovered from the accused, Dave clarified that it was only Islamic literature. Bar and Bench reported that Justice Mehta further observed that the accused had formed a WhatsApp group where a flag resembling that of ISIS was found.

Dave argued that the accused has been in jail for over two years and is 70 per cent disabled, adding that no RDX or explosive material was recovered. The bench, however, maintained that the allegations were serious and refused to grant bail.
