The largest and brightest Moon of the year, called the ‘Beaver Supermoon’, emerged on Wednesday night, as people across several cities looked up to the sky and were left mesmerised by the display of the Moon’s extraordinary brightness and size.
This is the second of three supermoons set for 2025 and the closest full moon to Earth this year, making it the largest lunar event of the year. The November Supermoon will make its closest approach to Earth at about 357,000 km away, roughly 17,000 miles closer than a typical full moon.
Why Is It Called A ‘Supermoon’?
The Moon does not orbit the Earth in a perfect circle, but rather in an egg-shaped elliptical orbit, which means that it is not always at the same distance from the Earth. A supermoon occurs when a full moon coincides with perigee, the point in the Moon’s elliptical orbit where it is nearest to Earth.
When the full Moon appears near the perigee, it looks up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than the smallest full Moon, offering a spectacular view. Since this supermoon is the closest full moon, it dramatically enhanced the Moon’s brightness and size, offering a mesmerising appearance.
Why Is It Called ‘Beaver Supermoon’?
The title ‘Beaver Moon’ reflects the tradition of Native Americans and early European settlers to name full moons based on natural cycles and seasonal activities. It is the time of year when beavers become particularly active as they build dams and stock up on food for the winter, according to the BBC.
Which Cities Can View It?
The supermoon reached its peak brightness at 6:49 pm (Indian time) and was visible from every part of the globe. Major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Lucknow and Chandigarh can expect a clear view if the weather remains clear and cloud cover is absent.
However, viewing the supermoon from Delhi remains a challenge as the city is experiencing heavy pollution, and the smog can blur the night sky. However, people across the country wasted no time in sharing pictures of the spectacular lunar event.
