A day after leading a massive protest march against the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Kolkata, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee personally received her enumeration form from a booth-level officer (BLO) at her Kalighat residence on Wednesday.

The BLO in charge of booth no 77 under Bhabanipur Assembly constituency, Amit Kumar Roy, arrived at Banerjee’s residence around 10:30 am to hand over the form, news agency PTI reported, citing a source.

The official was, however, stopped by on-duty police officers. When asked about the purpose of the visit, Roy identified himself and explained that he was delivering the “enumeration form" to a voter at 30B, Harish Chatterjee Street.

The on-duty officials didn’t allow him to enter the CM’s residence due to security restrictions and asked him to hand over the form to them.

However, Roy refused to do so, citing the poll body’s rules stipulating that the papers can only be handed directly to the voter listed in the rolls.

Following a brief exchange, senior police officials consulted security personnel inside the residence and permitted Roy to enter, but only after leaving his bag and mobile phone with the officers on duty outside, the report added.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee came out of her room to meet the BLO and received the form directly from him. Roy informed her that once the form was filled out, her office could notify him to collect it.

Banerjee assured that her office would make the necessary call once the form was ready.

Mamata Leads Protest March

Earlier on Tuesday, the West Bengal Chief Minister led a massive protest against the exercise and asserted that the fall of the BJP-led government at the Centre would be inevitable if “even a single eligible voter was omitted" from the rolls.

She directly accused the Election Commission of being a political tool for the BJP, alleging that the revision drive was being conducted selectively and with malicious intent.

The TMC chief’s central charge is one of “clear discrimination". She demanded the EC explain why the intensive revision drive is being implemented in opposition-ruled states like West Bengal, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, yet is allegedly being skipped in BJP-ruled states such as Assam and Tripura—all of which face elections next year.

She further linked the SIR to the controversial National Register of Citizens (NRC), suggesting it was a deliberate attempt to intimidate and disenfranchise legitimate voters.

What Is SIR?

The SIR involves a detailed, on-ground verification of electoral rolls by booth-level officers to identify and remove duplicate, deceased, migrated, or ineligible voters—a process that has not been undertaken at this scale in nearly two decades.

Opposition parties, however, have alleged that the revision is being used selectively to delete names of marginalised and opposition-leaning voters.

The first phase of the exercise in Bihar sparked controversy after more than 68 lakh names were reportedly removed from the final voter rolls.
