The West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday (October 22, 2025) took to social media alleging that a desecrated idol at Suryanagar Gram Panchayat in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas was put in a prison van by the police.

On Wednesday (October 22, 2025), tensions flared at south Bengal’s Kakdwip region over the desecration of an idol. Protests erupted immediately after the idol was discovered broken, with locals blocking the National Highway in protest.

“Today, the most disgraceful incident has taken place in West Bengal! The idol of Maa Kali was placed inside a prison van! This incident is not only utterly condemnable but one that compels every devotee to bow their head in shame,” Union Minister Sukanta Majumder wrote on X on Wednesday (October 22, 2025).

Amit Malviya, the information and technology chief of the BJP, accused district police officers of “fleeing the scene with hundreds of policemen, taking away the idol of Maa Kali in a prison van.”

Many BJP supporters also joined the online outrage against the desecration and placement of the idol in a prison van at Kakdwip, sharing videos and illustrations of the alleged incident. The veracity of the visuals could not be verified.

“Instead of arresting the culprits, the police turned their force on the villagers. This blatant misuse of power sparked outrage among Hindus, who united in protest — forcing the administration onto the defensive,” Mr. Malviya said on Wednesday (October 22, 2025).

A senior police officer told The Hindu on Wednesday (October 22, 2025) that “the situation turned communal” and search is on to find the miscreant(s).

“The locals had blocked the National Highway over the issue along with the damaged idol and refused to go ahead with the immersion. Police persuaded with the agitators for hours to withdraw the blockade which was causing serious public ‘inconvenience’ with ambulances carrying patients also being stuck. When the agitators did not relent and started pelting stones at the police, minimum force was resorted to by the police to disperse the mob. The immersion of the idol was facilitated thereafter,” the West Bengal Police wrote on social media.
