As per local complaints, Tahsin Ahmed reportedly promised investors hefty monthly interest in exchange for investments in his ventures. Initially, participants received some returns, but payments allegedly stopped after a few months, triggering widespread protests.
On Wednesday, angry depositors staged a demonstration outside Tahsin Ahmed’s residence in Asansol’s Railpar area, demanding their money back. Some investors have alleged that the scam could be worth as much as Rs 450 crore.
A retired BSF officer, who claims to be among the victims, said: “I initially invested Rs 3 lakh and received good returns. Later, I put in Rs 41 lakh in total, but now neither my money nor interest is coming. Many others are in the same situation."
A woman who was also among the victims said: “He took money in the name of trading. We were getting a good return but the problem started from this year. We were getting returns but then he said he met with an accident and since then, he hasn’t been available."
While the BJP has accused the TMC of shielding its leader’s family, the party said he was once their vice-president but is no longer part of the TMC. “We have heard about the case and we want to say police should take action against him." The local police have received complaints and are said to be verifying the allegations.
