BJP MP (Rajya Sabha) K. Laxman has accused the Revanth Reddy-led Congress government of betraying the Backward Classes (BC) in the State with its decision to issue an ordinance for the implementation of 42% reservations in local body elections as such a move would lead to legal issues and ultimately harm the BCs since the Bills related to BC reservations are due for President’s assent.
Speaking to the media in New Delhi on Saturday, Mr. Laxman said that the Congress government lacks commitment towards BC community members. He also alleged that the party and its leader, Rahul Gandhi, are resorting to appeasement politics by stating that 10% of Muslims in the State are BCs.
“Rahul Gandhi says the Telangana caste census is a role model for the country. What kind of role model do you want to create? We have 12% Muslim population, and now you’re saying that 10% of them are OBCs. This will eat away the rightful share of the BCs,” he alleged.
According to Mr. Laxman, the percentage of BCs in the State before the Congress came to power was 51%. “Now the BC percentage has come down to 46%, and the 10% Muslims are also being included in the BCs,” he said.
Laxman also slammed BRS MLC and Telangana Jagruthi president K Kavitha for taking credit for the government’s decision to issue the ordinance. “While Kavitha is celebrating the decision, her party leaders are making comments against it. This double standard must be condemned,” Laxman said and questioned why the State government is not disclosing the population details of each caste that falls under the BCs.
