The Bharatiya Janata Party has decided to delay the announcement of its new national president until after the upcoming Vice-Presidential election, indicating a careful adjustment of its internal power structure amid a changing political landscape post-2024, News18 has learnt.

Senior BJP sources confirm that although party chief JP Nadda’s extended tenure was initially set to end after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the leadership now plans to hold the formal succession until the Vice-Presidential contest concludes in September. This move appears both strategic and symbolic. However, the announcement is likely to occur before the Bihar elections, a highly placed source in the party added.

The Vice President, who also serves as the chairman of the Rajya Sabha, holds a significant constitutional post, especially as the NDA’s numbers in the upper house remain tight. With the opposition gaining strength after reducing the BJP’s Lok Sabha majority, the party is prioritising consensus-building and floor management in Parliament before initiating an organisational transition.

There is also a clear intention to avoid parallel power centres during this delicate period. “A new party president brings fresh dynamics, including state-level policy changes, cadre reshuffles, and potential strategic adjustments. But for now, the party seeks discipline, stability, and unity while navigating critical legislation in Parliament and gearing up for assembly elections in Bihar and West Bengal," said a senior BJP leader.

According to sources, the party has internally discussed several names for the top post, including senior leaders with organisational strength, administrative capability, RSS acceptance, and electoral experience. The selection will reflect not only political loyalty but also alignment with Modi-Shah’s vision for 2029 and beyond.

The BJP’s strategy also involves grooming the next tier of leadership while maintaining the core narrative. Delaying the announcement helps the BJP avoid unnecessary factional speculation before the Vice-Presidential poll, where every ally and every vote are crucial. It allows the party time to consider caste, regional, and generational balances before finalising the new president.

In essence, the BJP seems to be opting for parliamentary pragmatism over organisational overhaul for now. With high-stakes elections approaching and the 2027 Presidential race already on the horizon, the party is pacing its moves carefully. Once the Vice-Presidential election is concluded, the reshuffle at the top will follow, potentially including changes in the central cabinet as well.
