The Ministry of Defence on Friday signed a contract worth approximately Rs 2,000 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the procurement of indigenous air defence fire control radars for the Indian Army.

The deal was signed under the ‘Buy (Indian – Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured)’ category, which aims to boost local defence production. The agreement was formalised in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.

According to the ministry, the fire control radars are designed to detect a wide range of airborne threats, including fighter jets, attack helicopters, and enemy drones. These systems will be equipped with at least 70% indigenous content.

“This marks a significant step in the modernisation of the Army’s air defence regiments and will enhance operational readiness. It also supports the government’s push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing," the ministry said in a statement.

The procurement is also expected to boost domestic defence industries by involving Indian micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the supply of components and raw materials.

Officials said the radars will play a key role in strengthening India’s defensive capabilities, offering real-time tracking and threat identification across diverse combat scenarios.

The deal is seen as a major milestone under the government’s Make in India initiative in the defence sector, aimed at reducing dependence on foreign equipment and fostering indigenous innovation.
