BJP repeats Babulal Soren as candidate for by-poll in Ghatsila assembly seat

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Central Election Committee (CEC) on Wednesday (October 15, 2025) re-nominated Babulal Soren, son of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren for the by-poll in Ghatsila assembly seat.

The seat has fallen vacant after the death of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) MLA Ramdas Soren. In the 2024 Jharkhand assembly election, Ramdas had defeated Babulal with the margin of 22,446 votes.

Voting for the Ghatsila Assembly seat by-election will take place on November 11, and counting of votes will take place on November 14. The last date for the nomination is October 21, 2025 and candidates can withdraw the nominations by October 24.

The Ghatsila Assembly seat is reserved for the Scheduled Tribe (ST) and falls under the East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand. Earlier, the total voters were 2,51,367, however after the Special Summary Revision (SSR) it has now increased to 2,55,823.

The number of male voters is 124,899 and female voters is 130,921 and transgenders is three.

After Jharkhand became a state, Congress’s candidate Pradeep Kumar Balmuchu won the Ghatsila seat in the 2005 assembly elections but in 2009 elections, Ramdas Soren won on JMM ticket.

In the 2014 elections, Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Laxman Tudu was elected MLA from and again in the 2019 elections, JMM’s Ramdas Soren won.

Earlier, BJP has released a list of its star campaigner which includes Union Ministers Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Jual Oram, Annapurna Devi, and Sanjay Seth, as well as the Chief Minister of Odisha Mohan Charan Majhi and Chhattisgarh’s CM Vishnu Deo Sai.

The star campaigners list also BJP State President and Leader of the Opposition Babulal Marandi, BJP State Working President and MP Aditya Sahu, former Chief Ministers Arjun Munda, Raghubar Das, Champai Soren, Madhu Koda, and Jharkhand in-charge Laxmikant Vajpayee, along with local MLAs.

JMM led by Chief Minister Hemant Soren has not yet announced the name of it candidate for the by-poll.
