Silchar: A brief border flare-up along the Sylhet-Sribhumi stretch of the India-Bangladesh frontier on Monday prompted a high-level flag meeting between the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), leading to an amicable resolution of the dispute.According to BSF officials, the incident occurred near Harinagar in the Bhanga area of Assam’s Sribhumi district, after BSF personnel attempted to reclaim a tract of land that had reportedly been encroached upon by Bangladeshi farmers. The land, officials said, had remained submerged for a long time, leading to confusion over the location of the border pillar.“When the water receded, our troops found that Bangladeshi nationals were cultivating on Indian soil.
During the process of reclaiming the area, some locals from across the border resisted and tried to obstruct the BSF,” a senior official said.Bangladeshi media had initially reported that “farmers were obstructed at Zakiganj border in Sylhet” and that BSF “retreated” following protests by locals and BGB. However, BSF sources clarified that the confrontation took place well within the Indian territory.A video circulating on Bangladeshi social media, reportedly filmed from the Rasulpur area under Manikpur Union of Zakiganj upazila, showed four BSF personnel removing bamboo poles near the riverbank as locals shouted that the land belonged to Bangladesh.
To ease tensions, a flag meeting was convened between BSF and BGB officials. During the talks, BGB acknowledged that the disputed land lay within the Indian territory and assured cooperation in maintaining peace along the border.“BGB officials expressed regret over the misunderstanding and agreed to remove Bangladeshi cultivators from the area,” BSF sources said. The situation along the Sribhumi-Zakiganj border is now reported to be calm, with both border forces reaffirming their commitment to resolving such issues through dialogue and maintaining the sanctity of the international boundary.
