Fans are buzzing with theories about who will don the Lady Whistledown mantle in 'Bridgerton' season 5. With Penelope stepping down, speculation points towards overlooked staff members like Varley, or perhaps a redeemed Cressida. Alice Mondrich's rise and Madame Delacroix's potential return are also strong contenders, fueled by subtle clues and vocal inflections.
As ‘Bridgerton 4' rolled to an end, fans could not help but wonder about who the next couple in focus will be for season 5. However, this time around, that is not the biggest debate topic.
As Penelope put down her feather as Lady Whistledown, all had assumed that this chapter had come to an end, as it had in the books as well. However, the OTT series brought in a twist when a new issue of Lady Whistledown reached Colin Bridgerton and possibly the rest of the ton as well. As soon as it was revealed that there would be a new mysterious writer to await in the future seasons, fans have been buzzing with excitement and fan theories.
Here is a look at some of the theories of who could be the next Lady Whistledown.
Fan theories about who is the next Lady Whistledown
There have been a lot of theories about who must be taking over the feather this time around, and one of the most interesting theories to date has been about the staff members. Many people shared online that the staff members of all of the houses of the ton were put in major focus this year, which could be a clue about the new Whistledown. One person posted, “I was thinking since the staff was such a huge focus and Varley did some detective work this season, maybe a group of staff (since they are never noticed), from major households could get the dirt.
Then one main writer. Julie Andrew’s inflections in her voice were very different and didn’t seem like someone from high society.”

A lot of other fan theories about the same shared that Varley specifically could be the one who writes the new Lady Whistledown issue. Multiple times, as many fans pointed out, it has been suggested that Varley had a knack for getting gossip and being resourceful in that manner. Many fans have wondered if this was another clue into the matter or not.
Cressida’s entry may mean something
Another theory that seems to be popping up on social media accounts is about Cressida taking over the title. In season 3, she had falsely made claims of being Lady Whistledown, though this season, she returned and redeemed herself. Many have thought that her introduction this season as Lady Penwood may point towards a new profession at hand.
Alice Mondrich is another strong contender
This season saw a lot of characters come to the limelight more often than before.
This also includes Alice Mondrich, who became the queen’s lady in waiting recently after taking over for Lady Danbury. The woman had remained unhappy with her position and the limitations; however, by the end of the season, she proved to be resourceful and realized that words have a lot of power. Many have been claiming that Mondrich is another strong contender for the next Lady Whistledown title.
One fan even posted about the same and said, “I'm thinking Alice Mondrich, she wants to impress the queen and she learned that gossip and words hold a lot of power.”

Is Madame Delacroix making a comeback?
While the beloved seamstress Madame Delacroix did not return for this season, that has not stopped fans from speculating about whether she is the new Lady Whistledown or not. One fan wrote, “Ooo I love these clues! I would guess not since she didn't appear at all this season, but you make some compelling arguments - and also Julie Andrews' voiceover went very cockney as the author changed, and Madame Delacroix has that accent when she isn't pretending to be French.
”Another fan speculated about the same and stated, “Madame Delacroix not being there this season could be a clue in itself. I think lady whistledown can be delacroix, not taking her French personality into account.”
