Britain and Germany pledged military support to Belgium after drone incursions disrupted Brussels Airport, with RAF personnel set to be deployed

Britain has provided military support to Belgium to help counter drone incursions, head of UK’s armed forces said. Germany has also vowed support to Belgium.
BBC quoted Richard Knighton as saying that his Belgian counterpart had asked for assistance earlier this week and that equipment and personnel were now on the way.
Members of the RAF’s 2 Force Protection Wing are likely to be deployed, according to the UK media.
This was after Brussels Airport was shut down temporarily on Thursday night after drones were seen nearby. They were also seen in other areas, including a military base.
According to BBC, about 3,000 Brussels Airlines passengers were affected by Thursday’s disruption, with the carrier saying it faced “considerable costs" from cancelling or diverting dozens of flights.
Similar drone incursions have been reported in several NATO nations. However, Russia had repeatedly denied accusations of conducting “hybrid warfare" on allies of Ukraine.
While confirming Britain’s assistance to Belgium, Knighton said there weren’t confirmed reports that the drones spotted were indeed by Russia but that it was “plausible" they had been ordered by Moscow.
He added that the country would help Belgium “by providing our kit and capability".
In a statement, Defence Secretary John Healey said: “As hybrid threats grow, our strength lies in our alliances and our collective resolve to defend, deter and protect our critical infrastructure and airspace".
Meanwhile, the German defence ministry vowed on Friday to support Belgium with anti-drone measures after a request from Brussels.
Belgian defence minister pointed out that previously there were no evidence to suggest this.
“At first, drones flying over our military bases were seen as our problem," Francken said earlier this week. “Now it has become a serious threat affecting civilian infrastructure across multiple European countries."
