Bruno Fernandes etched his name deeper into Manchester United history after breaking a long-standing club record held by club legend David Beckham during United’s 3-1 win over Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Portuguese playmaker registered his 16th assist of the season in the Premier League, surpassing Beckham’s previous club record of 15 set in the 1999–2000 campaign. Fernandes’ sublime through-ball set up Matheus Cunha for United’s crucial second goal, helping the hosts regain the lead after Villa had briefly drawn level.
Reflecting on the milestone, Fernandes admitted the achievement felt even more special because it came through helping his teammates succeed.
“I’m more proud and more pleased because I did it serving my teammates. That’s even better because giving joy to others is also very good when you play in the position I play, so I’m very happy that I can help them to score, be happy and give them moments," Fernandes said.
“Obviously, it’s a huge achievement for me. But the main achievement for me would be to be in the top spots at the end of the season."
Fernandes’ assist came in a match that strengthened United’s push for a top-four finish and qualification for the UEFA Champions League. After a quiet first half, Casemiro opened the scoring early in the second period with a well-timed header from Fernandes’s corner.
Villa responded through Ross Barkley, who marked his first league start in over a year with a powerful strike past goalkeeper Senne Lammens following a defensive scramble.
But Fernandes’ moment of magic soon restored United’s advantage as Cunha latched onto his pass and finished calmly. Substitute Benjamin Sesko later sealed the victory with a deflected effort, capping another impressive performance under interim manager Michael Carrick.
Carrick, whose side has surged into third place in the table, praised his captain’s influence after the match.
“He’s proven over a period of time how impactful he is in the big moments. He’s there all the time, he puts himself forward in training and games," Carrick said.
The win marked Carrick’s seventh in nine matches since taking charge following the departure of Ruben Amorim. With eight games remaining, United now sit three points ahead of Villa and are firmly in control of their destiny in the race for Champions League qualification.
