Alexander Bublik produced one of the most remarkable moments and the best comeback of Roland-Garros 2025 so far, overturning a two-set deficit to defeat No. 9 seed Alex De Minaur in the third round on Thursday.
De Minaur’s streak of reaching four consecutive Grand Slam quarter-finals ended as he lost 2-6, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 to Bublik after blowing a two-set lead.
For much of the opening hour, De Minaur appeared to be in complete control. The Australian looked sharp and energetic under the clear Paris skies, swiftly winning the first two sets with his characteristic speed and precision.
Bublik, known for his unconventional style, seemed frustrated and lackluster, offering little resistance as the Aussie dictated play from the baseline.
However, this only spurred the world No. 62 Bublik into adopting a bold, nothing-to-lose approach that fueled his performance for the rest of the match, achieving a significant personal victory.
His risky shot selection started to pay off — drop shots, booming serves, and angled winners began hitting their targets. The Kazakh disrupted De Minaur’s rhythm with a blend of flair and fearlessness, taking the third set 6-4 and marking a turning point.
From that moment, it was all Bublik. He demonstrated his dominance in the final game of the fourth set, taunting De Minaur with a between-the-legs shot before delivering a powerful shot through the baseline to even the match at two sets each.
An exhausted De Minaur could no longer hold on, and Bublik easily clinched the decisive final set, racing to a 6-2 win to seal the match.
This marks De Minaur’s third defeat after holding a two-set lead, following losses to Marin Cilic at the 2018 US Open and Cristian Garin at Wimbledon in 2022.
“It’s one of those matches that slip away without really knowing how. Definitely not a good day for me," De Minaur commented after his loss.
“I’ll need to have a tough conversation with my team to properly analyze what happened today and identify the reason," he added.
The Australian will drop 350 points in the ATP Rankings, while Bublik will face Portuguese qualifier Henrique Rocha next at Roland Garros.
