The NASCAR driver-turned-broadcaster Jeff Burton came into the limelight explaining why Joey Logano deserves respect after fans began questioning the legitimacy of the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series champion.
However, he rebuffed the criticisms with, “Bullsh**! He won the championship.”
2024 Championship: Fans Question Logano
While some critics were congratulating other drivers on how well they did in the past season, Logano's numbers were quickly put under criticism. With only seven top-five finishes, 13 top-10 finishes, and the lowest average finish (17.1) for a champion, these detractors argued he didn't really measure up to others like Chase Elliott, who had a much stronger average this season, or Kyle Larson, who got more wins.According to some, these stats were only adding fuel to their theory that Logano's championship was nothing but an affront to NASCAR, an unfortunate incident borne out of its playoff format rather than an actual display of dominance on the circuit.
Jeff Burton Fires Back
On the Door Bumper Clear podcast, Jeff Burton did not mince words when addressing this criticism.“NASCAR's got a decision they have to make, and they are going to make it.
And whoever wins the championship, whatever the rules are, that's the deserving champion. It pisses me off when somebody says, 'Joey Logano didn't win the championship.” Burton stated. The veteran reminded the fans that NASCAR's playoffs rules were there for everyone, and Logano played the system better when it mattered most. "There was a set of rules, and they went out and did it better than everybody else. You may not like that they won the championship, but don't take the credit away from them for what they did."
Not the flashy stats, but he did what mattered. Which, on account of perfect timing, now allows Team Penske to claim its third consecutive championship sweep and assert dominance over modern NASCAR.More than just another title defense, Logano has opened up about his future plans. This past summer, he expressed his thoughts on retirement on the occasion of his 600th career start at Dover Motor Speedway, which proved a symbolic milestone level with many of NASCAR's most seasoned drivers. At present, however, the focus remains on shutting up the critics and proving that his 2024 championship was anything but some good fortune.
