Buxar: National Deworming Day was observed in Buxar district on Tuesday, aimed at protecting children and adolescents aged between 1 and 19 years from parasitic worm infections.
The campaign was launched by district magistrate Vidyanand Singh at Rajkiya Buniyadi School, where he administered Albendazole tablets to students.
Speaking at the event, the district magistrate highlighted the significance of the initiative. “Worm infections significantly hinder the mental and physical development of children. In many cases, they lead to anaemia, which can be prevented through timely deworming,” he said. This year, the district has set a target of administering Albendazole tablets to 10,40,434 children and adolescents across 1,262 govt schools, 293 private schools, and all anganwadi centres. A mop-up round is scheduled for Sept 19 to ensure coverage for those who missed the first round. The civil surgeon of Buxar explained the risks posed by worm infections, citing anaemia, diarrhoea, stomach pain, fatigue, vomiting, and loss of appetite — all of which affect school attendance and performance.
“This programme is conducted annually in collaboration with the health department, education department, and ICDS. It not only helps improve children’s health but also enhances their ability to focus on studies and lead an active life,” he said. He further urged families to maintain hygiene — avoiding open defecation, washing hands before meals, eating covered food, and drinking clean water — to prevent reinfection.
District education officer Satish Ranjan and district immunisation officer were also present.
