The cane-crushing season for 2025-26 began at the public-sector Chengalrayan co-operative sugar mill at Periyasevalai on Wednesday.
Sugarcane raised on about 10,347 acres by nearly 4,000 farmers has been registered for supply to the mill for the current season. About 3.01 lakh tonnes of sugarcane were expected to be crushed at the mill during the season.
The crushing season was formally inaugurated by Collector Sheik Abdul Rahman.
According to a press release, farmers would be paid ₹4,000 per tonne of cane. In order to encourage members of the society, who had registered and crushed cane in the last crushing season of 2024-25, a support incentive of ₹349 a tonne was issued. A total of ₹7.95 crore was directly credited to the accounts of members of the sugarcane cooperative society.
