A senior Russian general was killed in southern Moscow after an explosive device planted under his car detonated on Monday. Russia’s Investigative Committee has launched a probe into the “murder" of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, who headed the training department within the General Staff, AFP reported.

In a statement, the probe agency said one line of inquiry was whether the attack was “linked" to “Ukrainian special forces." Since Russia launched its military operation in Ukraine in February 2022, Kyiv has been blamed for a series of attacks targeting Russian military officials and pro-Kremlin figures both inside Russia and in Russian-controlled parts of Ukraine.

The killing follows several high-profile attacks in recent years. In April, General Yaroslav Moskalik, a deputy of the General Staff, died in a car bomb explosion near Moscow. In December 2024, Igor Kirillov, head of Russia’s radiological, chemical and biological defence forces, was killed when a booby-trapped electric scooter exploded in Moscow, an attack later claimed by Ukraine’s SBU security service.

Earlier incidents include the April 2023 killing of Russian military blogger Maxim Fomin, who died after a statuette exploded in a café in Saint Petersburg. In August 2022, a car bomb attack killed Daria Dugina, daughter of ultranationalist ideologue Alexander Dugin.

Russian authorities said investigations are ongoing to determine those responsible for the latest attack.
