Reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz won a grueling battle against American 13th seed Ben Shelton to reach the French Open quarter-finals on Monday.

The Spaniard triumphed 7-6 (10/8), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 after more than three hours of intense serves and powerful shots on Court Philippe Chatrier.

Alcaraz will face another American in the last eight, as 12th seed Tommy Paul earlier defeated Alexei Popyrin in straight sets.

The four-time Grand Slam winner narrowly clinched the first set, which featured only one unconverted break point, after a lengthy tiebreak that saw both players having chances to take the lead.

In the second set, Alcaraz finally managed to break Shelton’s strong serve, which allowed him to secure a two-set lead.

However, Shelton managed to break Alcaraz twice in the third set, winning the most competitive of the four sets.

Despite this setback, the 22-year-old Alcaraz regained the advantage in the fourth set and successfully served out the match as dusk fell over the center court.
