Even as Manchester United continue to empower manager Ruben Amorim to rebuild the squad after a disappointing season, the Red Devils have been sent a radical proposal to replace the Portuguese with ex-Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. While United fans brace themselves for skipper Bruno Fernandes' move to Al-Hilal, former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has suggested the club should also let go of Amorim and bring in Klopp.
Keown raised a question mark over Amorim's future after United's disappointing run at the Premier League season, where they finished 15th from the top with just 42 points. The Red Devils soon also lost the final of the Europa League to Tottenham. Fans continue to put their weight behind the manager but the Arsenal icon reckons it's time for United to say goodbye to Amorim.
“The amount of games they have lost, I am still concerned that maybe this is not the right manager for Manchester United. It is going to be a very interesting start to the season," Keown said while appearing on talkSPORT. “They could do a lot worse than go and get Jurgen Klopp to manage their football club. I am not trying to sensationalise, I just believe that he might do an incredible job there. They need somebody with more experience than the current manager."
Keown was asked if he sees Klopp making a move to Old Trafford when the former Liverpool manager is passionate about the Anfield-based club. “Why not? He (Klopp) has done it once before albeit it was a better foundation," said Keown before digging into skipper Fernandes and asking United to straightway sell him to Al-Hilal.
“I think Manchester United need to sell Bruno Fernandes. I don’t think, when they get to where they want to get to and if PSG are the blueprint of how you want to play… he is not going to press. He is the icing on the cake type of player but even then, with his end product, I don’t believe he is good enough for Manchester United, sell him now."
Uncertainty persists on Fernandes' future with United since Manchester Evening News reported the midfielder is considering a move to the Saudi Pro League. Al-Hilal's willingness to pay £100m for Fernandes' services could boost United's transfer window plans while also leaving Amorim as the most popular figure standing at Old Trafford club.
