Carmelo Anthony is one of the biggest stars that came out of the basketball world back in the early 2000s. Alongside LeBron James and Darko Milicic, they made the top 3 picks in the 2003 NBA Drafts.

Bron went to the Cleveland Cavaliers, Milicic was chosen by Detroit Pistons, and Melo went to the Denver Nuggets.

But did you know that back in 2006, before the 2008 Olympics, there was a behind the scene thing going that almost got LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, and Chris Bosh joining the same team? Let's find out what really happened.

Carmelo Anthony decided against joining a super team

Although LeBron James stayed with the Cleveland Cavaliers until 2010 and Carmelo Anthony with the Denver nuggets til 2011, in 2006, when their initial contract with their teams came to an end, there were speculations that instead of signing an extension, they would join another team alongside Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.

While none of them really went for it, in a podcast with Paul George in July of last year, Anthony revealed a bit about what went down on his end.

"It was supposed to be Bosh and Wade and then me and Bron going somewhere. We just couldn't find out where."

But in a team that already had these three players, whom he later teamed up with at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, he didn't want to be the third or fourth choice. And that was for the best, given that choice probably led to him becoming one of the very best to ever grace the NBA courts.

And his recent Hall of Fame induction shows just that.

Carmelo Anthony on why he did not join the team

Carmelo Anthony though was not very keen on joining a team where he would be the fourth option. He was already making a name for himself in the NBA as one of the top class scorers of the game, but if he had decided to join a superteam with the likes of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh, his position would be compromised.“Imagine me at 23 years old, 24 years old, being the fourth option on the team when I'm leading my team every single year.

Like, I'm finding my way in this league. And you want me to leave that and go be a fourth option? I don't know how mentally I was going to do that. So I was like, 'Hell, no. I can't be that fourth.'”

And so, what could have been did not happen. Instead, they all came together for the Beijing Olympics in 2008 for the US National Basketball team, and made their mark by winning gold after an exceptional performance under the captaincy of Kobe Bryant. Also Read: "He made the team better" - College coach defends Carmelo Anthony against criticism over Hall of Fame honor
