Two-time French Open finalist Casper Ruud has criticized the ATP’s ranking system, describing it as a “rat race," as players feel pressured to compete in mandatory events even when injured.
Seventh seed Ruud was eliminated from the French Open on Wednesday, losing to unseeded Nuno Borges in the second round. Ruud revealed that knee pain had hampered his movement during the match.
When asked if the busy tennis calendar made it difficult to take time off to fully recover from injuries, the 26-year-old explained that skipping mandatory events negatively impacts a player’s ranking.
“It’s like a rat race with the rankings," he said. “You’re obliged to play due to the ATP’s rules on mandatory events. You feel you lose a lot if you don’t participate. The penalties are severe, as others will play, earn points, and you won’t."
The ATP did not immediately respond to a request for comment outside normal business hours.
Ruud also noted that players’ year-end bonuses are reduced by 25% if they miss a mandatory event.
“I’m not sure if you’re aware, but missing a mandatory event cuts 25% off your year-end bonus. This policy forces players to compete even when injured or sick, which I don’t think is fair," he added.
Ruud mentioned that he is looking forward to taking some time off to heal before returning to the court.
“I’m just looking forward to not being on painkillers for a few days. I want to let my injury properly heal and rest, and then see how I feel in a few weeks," he concluded.
