In the wake of a tragic incident in Rajasthan’s Jhalawar district, where seven students were killed and several others injured after a portion of a government school building collapsed, the central government has issued a directive to all states and union territories to conduct a mandatory safety audit of schools.

The directive requires schools to assess not only structural and fire safety but also take into account students' mental well-being and establish a reporting mechanism for safety concerns.

The incident took place at the Piplodi Primary School on Friday when the roof of the classroom suddenly collapsed while students were attending classes. A massive rescue operation was launched immediately, with police, local residents, and officials working together to pull students from the debris.

The 20-year-old school building had a roof made of stone slabs, which intensified the impact of the collapse. The victims were Class 7 students, aged between 12 and 14 years.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma also called it a tragic incident, describing it as extremely sad and heartbreaking.

"The concerned officials have been directed to ensure proper treatment of the injured children. May God grant a place to the departed divine souls in his lotus feet and give strength to the bereaved family to bear this immense sorrow," he said.
