A dramatic scene unfolded at the district hospital in Betul, Madhya Pradesh, when the family of a snakebite victim brought the poisonous cobra that bit him along in a sack. The incident took place in Kolgaon, where a man named Sukhram was bitten by a cobra.
His family caught the snake and confined it in a sack. Initially, Sukhram was taken to a local quack, but the family eventually called for an ambulance. Unaware of the snake, the ambulance staff transported Sukhram along with the sack containing the cobra to the district hospital.
Shock and Chaos At The Hospital
When the family revealed to the doctors that they had brought the cobra along, there was immediate panic. Patients in nearby beds fled the ward, shouting in fear. Hospital staff quickly called a snake catcher, who safely took the cobra away to release it in the forest.
The doctors were surprised when they asked the family why they had brought the snake. The family said they wanted to show the doctors the exact species that had bitten Sukhram. The doctors reprimanded them, explaining that such actions are unsafe.
Superstition Behind The Act
In many rural areas, there is a belief that taking the snake to a tantric can help remove the poison from the patient’s body. However, this is a dangerous superstition with no medical basis. Thankfully, the cobra remained in the sack and did not cause harm in the hospital.
The incident serves as a reminder of the risks involved in such practices and highlights the need for awareness about proper snakebite treatment.
