Fans of Chelsea and Real Betis clashed in Wroclaw, Poland, ahead of Wednesday’s Conference League final, prompting authorities to issue warnings about a strong response to any violence.
Social media footage captured scenes of fans in the city center throwing chairs and engaging in running battles on Tuesday evening.
Polish police reported they were working to identify those involved in the incidents. They detained a Spanish citizen after a Tuesday night scuffle and three more Spaniards early Wednesday for removing UEFA Conference League Final flags.
The recent Europa League final between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur also saw fan clashes before the match in Bilbao.
“Zero tolerance for violence on our streets!" wrote Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on X. He expressed gratitude to the police for their firm actions against the hooligans wearing Chelsea and Betis shirts in Wroclaw and warned that if necessary, the police would be even more ruthless.
Polish police assured the public that everyone could feel safe due to the significant police presence in key areas.
Chelsea, with two Champions League titles and six English top-flight championships, secured fourth place in the Premier League on Sunday, ensuring Champions League football next season.
Real Betis supporters are celebrating their team’s first appearance in a European final, hoping to outshine local rivals Sevilla with their own continental success.
