Another 1,100 acres freed from prawn gherries

Authorities have intensified efforts to reclaim Chilika lake, clearing over 2,000 acres from illegal prawn farming in the Krushna Prasad and Chilika tehsils. This joint operation by revenue, fisheries, police, and the Chilika Development Authority has removed extensive netting and bamboo structures. Cases have been filed against repeat offenders, signaling a renewed commitment to preserving the lake's ecosystem.

“On the first day, we seized around 165 bundles (40 quintals) of nets and several bamboo poles,” said Kanhu Charan Ghadei, tehsildar, Chilika. “The drive was conducted in Chhatragada, Barkul, Charatia, Chandraput and Kumandal Patana by pressing 25 labourers and other machinery,” he said.Bikash Sethy, additional tehsildar, Krushna Prasad, said they would resume the drive after a week. “We have already evicted around 1,200 acres last week,” he said. “CDA has extended logistical support, including three boats and other materials. Around 30 hired labourers were engaged,” he added.
