Chittoor police fines 10 motorists for drunk driving

Chittoor police imposed a total penalty of ₹1 lakh on 10 motorists caught driving under the influence of alcohol during a special enforcement drive, on Thursday. Acting on the directions of Superintendent of Police (SP) Tushar Dudi, the checks were conducted under the Municipal Corporation limits.

Circle Inspector (Chittoor-Traffic) K. Lakshminarayana said the accused were booked during vehicle inspections. All 10 offenders were produced before the Principal Junior Civil Court, where Judge Umadevi imposed a fine of ₹10,000 on each.

Mr. Lakshminarayana warned that drunk driving was a serious offence that endangers not only the driver but also other road users. He urged motorists to strictly adhere to traffic rules to avoid accidents and legal consequences.

The official said that as per Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, first-time offenders may face a fine of up to ₹10,000, up to six months’ imprisonment, or both. Repeat offences can attract a fine of ₹15,000 and imprisonment up to three years. The police reiterated that strict enforcement will continue to ensure road safety across the district.
