City professor elected as fellow of Indian National Science Academy for venom therapy research

Guwahati: Prof. Ashis Kumar Mukherjee, director of the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), Guwahati, has been elected as a fellow of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), New Delhi, in recognition of his pioneering research in snake and scorpion venom therapy.An internationally acclaimed scientist, Prof. Mukherjee has made groundbreaking contributions in biochemical and proteomic analysis, uncovering novel protein toxins and therapeutic agents from the venom of India’s ‘Big Four’ snakes and the red scorpion. His work has significantly advanced the quality and efficacy of commercial antivenom and opened new avenues for drug development targeting metabolic disorders.Currently on deputation from Tezpur University, he also serves as an outstanding professor at AcSIR. Prof. Mukherjee has received numerous national honours, including the Visitor’s Award for Research presented by the President of India in 2018.His election to INSA adds to a distinguished list of fellowships from leading scientific academies in India and abroad, including the Royal Society of Biology and the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK).
