Manali and its neighbourhood in Chennai experienced cloudburst and many areas received heavy rainfall on Saturday (August 30, 2025) night.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, Manali and its neighbourhood recorded 10.6 cm of rain from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. and 12.6 cm of rain from 11 p.m. to midnight on August 31 respectively. Wimco Nagar witnessed most intense spell of 15.7 cm. This was followed by Korattur with 13.7 cm and New Manali Town with 10.3 cm from 11 p.m. to midnight on 30 August. Meanwhile, Ennore (automatic weather station) recorded 8.8 cm of rain from 10.45 p.m. to 11.45 p.m. on August 30.
For a 24-hour period ending at 8.30 a.m. on Sunday (August 31), Manali experienced 27 cm of rainfall while New Manali Town and Wimco Nagar saw 26 cm and 23 cm of rainfall respectively.
Rains lashed several other areas of the city as well. While Kathivakkam and Tiruvottiyur recorded 13.6 cm and 12.6 cm respectively, Ayapakkam received 12.1 cm of rain for a 24-hour period ending at 8.30 a.m. on Sunday. Parrys and Ambattur got 11.5 cm and 11.2 cm of rain respectively during this period. Nerkundram, Ambattur and CD Hospital Tondiarpet registered 11 cm, 10 cm and 10.2 cm of rainfall respectively in this period.
While Kolathur and Ayanavaram Taluk Office recorded 9.6 cm, Kasimedu and Valasarawakkam got 9.5 cm and 9.1 cm respectively. Areas including Puzhal, Perambur, Aminjikarai, Chembarambakkam, Red Hills, Anna Nagar West, Thamaraipakkam and Okkiyam Thoraipakkam too received good rainfall.
Flights diverted
Three flights to Chennai were diverted to Bengaluru due to rains. Flights from destinations like Frankfurt, Mangaluru and New Delhi couldn’t land at the city airport owing to heavy rains and had to be diverted to Bengaluru airport.
