Pablo Barrios scored a brilliant brace as Atletico Madrid rebounded from their Club World Cup opening defeat to Paris Saint-Germain with a 3-1 victory over the Seattle Sounders on Thursday.
After a 4-0 loss to PSG at the Rose Bowl on Sunday, Atletico showcased their quality in a dominant performance at Lumen Field.
Seattle aimed to replicate Inter Miami’s earlier upset over European opposition, but without a star like Lionel Messi, the Sounders were fortunate the loss wasn’t more severe.
The Spanish side seemed eager to secure an early win, but their finishing left room for improvement.
Norwegian Alexander Sorloth missed an early chance, followed by Julian Alvarez, who skillfully dribbled into the box but shot wide.
The breakthrough came in the 11th minute when Giuliano Simeone, son of Atletico coach Diego, surged down the right and crossed low for Barrios, whose powerful shot hit the underside of the bar and went in.
Sorloth missed another great opportunity, blasting over the bar from close range, and was denied by Sounders keeper Stefan Frei in a one-on-one.
Despite dominating, Atletico only had one goal to show for it.
They believed they had a penalty when Simeone appeared to be fouled in the box by Reed Baker-Whiting, but after a video review, the referee overturned his decision.
As the first half ended, Baker-Whiting fired a shot just wide, showing some of the spirit Seattle had displayed in their narrow 2-1 loss to Botafogo in their opener.
Belgian Axel Witsel, brought on at the break, made an immediate impact. Marcos Llorente’s shot was tipped onto the underside of the bar, and Robin Le Normand set up Witsel to head in and make it 2-0.
Seattle responded with a quick shot on the turn from Albert Rusnak to reduce the deficit.
However, five minutes later, Barrios scored his second goal with a precise shot into the far corner from a long throw.
Alvarez hit the top of the post with a volley from the edge of the box, providing Seattle with a glimmer of hope, which fueled their efforts in the final stages.
The Sounders will be eliminated from the tournament if PSG avoids defeat against Botafogo later on Thursday.
