Coimbatore city police shoot in leg of history-sheeter near Trichy

COIMBATORE: A special police team from the Coimbatore city police shot in the leg of a history-sheeter when he tried to evade arrest near Trichy on Friday morning.The special team had been in Trichy for the last one week to arrest K Rajasekar, 35, of Bagavathi Amman Kovil Street in Dindigul in connection with a burglary case here.

Rajasekar allegedly broke into a house near Vellalore in Coimbatore city on Oct 20 and stole 45 sovereigns of gold.

On Friday morning, the team received a tip-off about his whereabouts. Four cops reached his hideout at Seenivasa Nagar near Edamalaipatti Puthur in Trichy. Rajasekar attacked sub-inspector Baskar and constable Kannan with a knife and tried to escape. SI Baskar opened fire on Rajasekar, who sustained injuries on his left leg and hip.A senior police officer said Rajasekar had five pending cases in the Kavundampalayam police jurisdiction and more than 45 cases across the state. “He was in two murders for gain, a Protection of Children from Sexual Offences case and other rape cases,” the officer added.
