Collector calls for action to reduce road accidents in Chittoor, focusing on national highways

District Collector Sumit Kumar on Friday (December, 12, 2025) instructed all line departments to work in a coordinated manner to curb road accidents, particularly along national highways passing through the district towards Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

The Collector was reviewing road safety measures at the District Road Safety Committee (DRSC) meeting held at the Collectorate here under the supervision of the Transport Department.

The Collector instructed the District Coordinator of Health Services (DCHS) and District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO) to prepare an integrated emergency response database for all identified black spots along NH-140, NH-69, and NH-42.

“The database should include the availability of doctors at nearby health centres, contact numbers, blood group stocks, ambulances and other critical medical resources,” Mr. Sumit Kumar said, adding that the information must be immediately available to the Police and Revenue Departments to ensure quicker medical intervention for victims in case of any accident.

Pointing to the high accident-prone zones, the Collector asked NHAI (National Highways Authority of India ) and R&B officials to take up rectification works without delay. Safety signboards, solar blinkers, road markings, rumble strips, reflective indicators and adequate lighting must be installed on all vulnerable locations. Police have been asked to monitor progress and submit a detailed status report before the next DRSC meeting.

At key locations such as CMC Junction, the Collector flagged issues including a damaged solar blinker, broken safety drums, lack of lighting and inadequate markings. He instructed NHAI to restore all installations and strengthen safety infrastructure.

Highlighting the rising number of two-wheeler accidents, the Collector instructed departments to intensify helmet-awareness campaigns in schools, junior colleges, ITIs and polytechnic institutions.

Officials from Transport, NHAI, R&B, RTC, Panchayat Raj and the Health Department participated in the meeting.
