Senior Congress leader and legislator Ghulam Ahmad Mir on Thursday expressed concern over the Raj Bhavan and the Chief Minister’s Office not working in coordination in Jammu and Kashmir and thus making the common man suffer.

Mr. Mir flagged the issue of “dual power structure” and claimed it has “created confusion and hardships for the public”. “On one side, there is the L-G, and on the other side, there is the CM. The common man is suffering as both act on their own without concern for people’s difficulties,” he said.

The Congress contested the 2024 Assembly elections in alliance with the ruling National Conference (NC) but did not join the government.

Mr. Mir said it was “unfortunate” that J&K was downgraded as a Union Territory (UT) in 2019. “No State in the country has faced what J&K went through on August 5, 2019. It was downgraded from a State to a UT. The move has left people with the biggest pain,” Mr. Mir said.

He recalled that the Centre had promised to restore Statehood after holding Assembly elections in J&K. “Elections did happen a year ago. No initiative has been taken to restore Statehood,” he added.
