Tension gripped Maddur town in Karnataka’s Mandya district on Sunday night after stone pelting broke out between two groups of different faiths during a Ganesh idol immersion procession. Eight people were injured in the incident.
The procession had begun from Siddhartha Nagar 5th Cross in Maddur town under tight police security. When it crossed a mosque near Ram Rahim Nagar at around 8 pm, a few miscreants allegedly pelted stones at the procession. In retaliation, another group hurled stones at the mosque, triggering a clash between Hindus and Muslims in the area.
The violence led to a tense situation in Maddur town as both groups confronted each other, forcing police to intervene to bring the situation under control. Mandya Superintendent of Police confirmed that 21 people have been arrested in connection with the incident.
Security has been further tightened in Maddur to prevent any escalation, and police said efforts are being made to restore normalcy in the area.
