Conor McGregor has officially withdrawn from the 2025 Irish presidential race, ending weeks of speculation about his political ambitions. The UFC star turned would-be politician confirmed the decision in a lengthy statement, citing conversations with his family and the reality of Ireland’s electoral system.

On Wednesday, September 10, McGregor announced on X (formerly Twitter) that he would no longer be contesting the presidential election scheduled for October 24. “Following careful reflection, and after consulting with my family, I am withdrawing my candidacy from this presidential race,” he said in the post.In his post, the 36-year-old fighter said he had “sincere intentions” of serving Ireland but ultimately chose to put family and long-term priorities first.
McGregor acknowledged the surge of public interest that followed his campaign tease earlier this year, including his high-profile meetings with political leaders abroad. He also admitted that his bid revealed the “exploited to prevent a true democratic Presidential election” in breaking through Ireland’s party-dominated system.In Ireland, you need support from 20 parliament members or four county councils to even qualify.
McGregor didn’t lock those in, which basically left him KO’d before round one even started.
Family talks and nomination hurdles lead to McGregor’s decision
According to McGregor, the final decision came after sitting down with his family. “This was not an easy decision, but it is the right one at this moment in time,” he said.
Earlier this month, he even filmed himself outside government buildings in Dublin, urging supporters to pressure councillors for backing. But the deadline was creeping up fast, and the numbers weren’t adding up.McGregor is still juggling legal issues, which probably didn’t help his political pitch.

While McGregor’s brief entry into politics has ended, the Irishman is convinced that this will not “be his last election.” Speculation is once again turning to his fighting career. Fans have long awaited his return to the Octagon after a string of injuries and postponed bouts. Some believe the Irishman could stage a comeback at UFC’s planned White House event in 2026, a stage McGregor himself has hinted was “made for him.”For now, McGregor has stepped away from politics, but his exit has only reignited questions about where his next battle, inside or outside the cage, will take place.
