Conrad unveils 2-phase security plan to protect women and children

Shillong: Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma has announced a comprehensive two-phase plan to bolster security infrastructure across the state, including the capital, to create a safer environment for vulnerable groups through enhanced surveillance and community involvement.The first phase of the plan involves the establishment of command centres at the locality level, which will be managed by local leaders such as headmen, Rangbah Shnongs, and Dorbar Shnongs. The second phase will see the integration of local CCTV systems with the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC). The Shillong Municipal Board has already identified 47 localities for CCTV installation, with work completed in seven areas.

The remaining installations are expected to be finalized by Nov or Dec 2025, according to the CM.During a meeting held on Thursday, Sangma engaged with educationists, local governing bodies, community leaders, and faith-based organizations to explore innovative solutions and preventive measures against crimes targeting women and children. The meeting underscored the urgency of the issue, with Sangma stating, “Crimes against women and children are serious and a grave human rights violation. Govt and society must work together with a coordinated multi-pronged approach to protect women and children, ensuring a safe and happy life and environment for them.

Participants in the meeting proposed a range of actionable recommendations, including the enhancement of surveillance systems and the installation of additional streetlights to improve public safety.
