Deputy Commissioner B. Fauzia Taranum on Tuesday said that the Police Department plays an indispensable role in maintaining peace, law and order in society, both during normal times and emergencies.
She was speaking after laying a wreath at the Police Martyrs Memorial on the District Armed Reserve (DAR) Grounds here during the Police Commemoration Day celebrations organised jointly by the city and District Police.
“Every government programme succeeds through coordination between the Police Department and the district administration. Whether it is elections, fairs or any public gathering, the efficiency and commitment of our police officers and personnel are crucial in ensuring social harmony and order,” Ms. Taranum said.
Referring to the department’s contribution during natural calamities such as floods and droughts, she noted that police personnel often extend vital assistance in managing a crisis and ensuring public safety.
The Deputy Commissioner also appreciated the retired police officers who through their associations continue to engage in social service by organising health check-up camps and blood donation drives.
“While we honour the martyrs who laid down their lives in the line of duty, we must also acknowledge the continued service of those who contribute to society even after retirement,” she added.
Speaking on the occasion, Superintendent of Police Addoor Srinivasalu said that October 21 holds a special significance for the police force.
“It is both a day of sorrow and pride,” he remarked, recalling the valour of 10 Indian policemen who were martyred on October 21, 1959, at Hot Springs in Ladakh while defending the nation’s borders against Chinese forces.
“This year, we pay tribute to 191 police officers and personnel from across various State and Central forces who sacrificed their lives in 2024-25 while performing their duties,” he added.
Police Commissioner Sharanappa S.D. presided over the event.
As part of the ceremony, police personnel paid floral tribute at the memorial, a ceremonial guard of honour fired three rounds in the air and the Police Band played the national anthem.
A two-minute silence was also observed in memory of the martyrs.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Kanika Sikarwal, Additional Superintendent of Police Mahesh Meghannanavar, senior and retired police officers and several dignitaries were present.
