Dell Curry had long stopped expecting the call. If the Charlotte Hornets were ever going to retire his jersey, he figured it would’ve happened years ago.
On Wednesday, Charlotte proved him wrong.
The Hornets announced that Curry’s No. 30 will be raised to the rafters on March 19 when they host the Orlando Magic, making him just the second player in franchise history — alongside the late Bobby Phills — to receive the honour.
“I never imagined it would happen," Curry said. “It means so much to me… Charlotte’s home. The Hornets are home. It’s in my DNA."
Curry spent 10 of his 16 NBA seasons in Charlotte after being selected in the 1988 expansion draft, becoming one of the most beloved figures in franchise history.
A lethal shooter off the bench, he won Sixth Man of the Year in 1993–94 and finished his Hornets career as the team’s all-time leader in games played (701) and second in points (9,839), behind only Kemba Walker.
Now 61, Curry remains deeply woven into the organization, currently in his 17th season as the team’s TV analyst and serving as a franchise ambassador.
The announcement itself came as a surprise. What Curry thought was a routine interview quickly turned emotional when broadcaster Eric Collins revealed the news live, with a commemorative logo flashing across the arena scoreboard.
“Nothing tops this," Curry said. “When we lose a game, I lose with them."
The moment resonated far beyond Charlotte. Steph Curry, the NBA’s all-time leader in three-pointers, delivered a heartfelt video tribute to his father.
“You are immortal in Hornets history," Steph said. “And I couldn’t be more proud."
No. 30 may be iconic across the NBA — worn by Steph and once by Seth Curry — but in Charlotte, it now belongs to Dell forever.
