Maulana Azad National Urdu University Students Collective on Wednesday demonstrated against the Telangana government’s efforts to resume a 50-acre land parcel allotted to the university

The students stated that it is an attack on public education, and that the government is treating educational institutions as land parcels, instead of academic institutions.

Student leader Talha Mannan strongly condemned the show cause notice which was sent to the varsity. “This notice is not an isolated administrative act. It reflects a disturbing trend where public universities are being viewed as vacant land banks. We have already seen how land belonging to the University of Hyderabad was sought to be taken away. MANUU students will not allow it to repeat itself here,” he said, adding that bureaucratic hurdles were causing delays.

Former MANUU Students’ Union president Mateen Ashraf underscored that there has been a shortage of hostels, and hundreds of students, especially from the marginalised sections and minorities were grappling with a paucity of accommodation “This land should be used to build hostels, libraries, and academic infrastructure, not handed over in the name of ‘resumption’,” he said.
