Cyclone Montha: IMD issues yellow alert for 11 districts in Karnataka

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bengaluru, which has forecast fairly widespread rainfall over Karnataka for the next few days due to Cyclone Montha, has issued a yellow alert for 11 districts on October 27 and 28.

C.S. Patil, a scientist at IMD Bengaluru, said that Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Bidar, Kalaburgi, Yadgir, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Raichur, Koppal and Gadag districts are likely to receive heavy rainfall on October 27 and 28.

A yellow alert has also been issued for Bengaluru, Vijayanagara, Chitradurga, Davangere, Tumakuru, Chikkaballapur, Kolar, Bengaluru Rural and Bengaluru South districts on October 27.

IMD synoptic meteorological features stated that Cyclone Montha is likely to move north-northwest wards and intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by morning of October 28.

“Continuing to move further north-northwestwards, it is very likely to cross Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam around Kakinada during evening/night of October 28 as a severe cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90- 100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph,”  it stated.

Coastal districts to be impacted

Mr. Patil said that due to this, the coastal districts are likely to receive extensive rainfall from October 27 to 29. He added that rainfall in these districts is expected to continue till November 2.

“Districts in south and north interior Karnataka are likely to receive extensive rainfall on October 27 and 28 and the intensity is likely to reduce after October 29,” Mr. Patil said.

He added that on Monday (October 27), the coastal districts received extensive rainfall and many places in south interior and north interior Karnataka received rainfall.

“Gadag received 5 cm, HAL Airport in Bengaluru received 3 cm and Mandya received 3 cm rainfall,” he added.
