The India Meteorological Department on Saturday (October 25, 2025) said the depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal moved westwards and is likely to intensify into a deep depression and further into a cyclonic storm.

The weather system is expected to strengthen into a deep depression by October 26 (Sunday) and a cyclonic storm over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of October 27 (Monday). It is likely to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast around Kakinada by Tuesday night, with maximum wind speeds of 90-100 kmph, gusting to 110 kmph, according to the India Meteorological Department.

Cabinet Secretary T. V. Somanathan chaired a meeting of the National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) to review preparedness for the impending cyclone in the Bay of Bengal. The Chief Secretaries of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry and the Additional Chief Secretary of Odisha apprised the Committee of the preparatory measures being taken to protect the population in the expected path of cyclonic storm and precautionary measures being taken by the local administration.

    Andhra Pradesh CM alerts district collectors

    Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu alerted all district collectors, superintendents of police, and other senior officials about the ‘Montha’ cyclone and held a teleconference with them.

    “As the Montha cyclone is expected to severely impact the state on October 26, 27, 28, and 29, the department has issued a red alert, and officials must be vigilant,” Naidu said in a press release.

    Noting that the cyclone’s sphere of influence could stretch from Srikakulam to Tirupati, the CM said heavy rains of up to 100 mm could lash the state, accompanied by gales gusting up to 110 kmph.

    Naidu directed officials to begin preparations to avert loss of life and property. He instructed them to alert coastal residents to evacuate to safer locations and to declare holidays for educational institutions if necessary.

    He also asked authorities to monitor water levels in all reservoirs, release water scientifically, and keep NDRF and SDRF teams on standby.

    The CM further instructed the Roads and Buildings, Energy, Irrigation, Municipal, and Panchayat Raj Departments to remain prepared, ensuring continuous availability of water, power, mobile tower, and civil supply services. -- PTI

    Odisha on high alert ahead of cyclone, fishermen advised caution

    The disaster management teams in Odisha are on high alert due to a brewing cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal, which is forecast to bring heavy rainfall to the state from October 27.While the cyclone is not expected to make a direct landfall in Odisha, it is still likely to cause widespread downpours and gusty winds.

    Revenue & Disaster Management Minister, Suresh Pujari, assured that the state is prepared for the cyclonic storm expected to hit on October 22nd or 29th. He affirmed that the health, water, resource, and energy departments are ready to tackle the situation.

    “Odisha is highly vulnerable to natural disasters such as heavy rainfall, flooding, river swelling, and cyclones. We are preparing for an impending cyclonic storm predicted to hit its coast on the 22nd or 29th. Departments, including Health, Water Resources, Energy, and Agriculture, are fully prepared. Local Administrations across Odisha, especially in vulnerable areas, have made arrangements for relief centres, evacuation, and the provision of essential supplies. We urge people not to panic as we are fully prepared,” he said. -- ANI

    Heavy rainfall forecast in parts of Telangana from October 27 to 29

    The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heavy rainfall over several parts of Telangana from October 27 to 29, as the current depression over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm.

    Speaking to The Hindu, Dharma Raju, a scientist at the IMD Hyderabad centre, said that the weather system, currently in a depression stage, is likely to strengthen into a deep depression by October 26 before taking the shape of a cyclone on October 27. “We are anticipating heavy rains for Telangana on October 27 and 28,” he said.
