The elder brother of a Janata Dal (United) leader, along with his wife and daughter, was found dead in their residence in Bihar’s Purnia district, according to police, with days to go for the first phase of the Bihar Assembly Elections.

The deceased were identified as JD(U) leader Neeranjan Kushwaha’s brother, Naveen Kushwaha, his wife Mala Devi and daughter Tanu Priya, according to Purnea Sadar Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Jyoti Shankar. The bodies were recovered from their house in the European colony under the Kehat Police Station limits on Tuesday night.

“Soon after receiving the information about the dead bodies found in the house, a police team reached the spot. The bodies have been sent for the post-mortem examinations to ascertain the exact cause of death," the SDPO was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

Forensic experts are collecting evidence from the spot, and further investigation is underway. Some family members of the deceased claimed that it appeared that Tanu Priya somehow fell from the staircase in her house and died, as per a local police officer.

The official said their family suspected that her father had fallen from the staircase while attempting to save his daughter and died. Later, Mala Devi died of cardiac arrest after receiving the news of the death of her husband and daughter.

A large number of people gathered at their house as the news spread. Bihar minister Lesi Singh and Independent Lok Sabha MP from Purnea, Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav, also visited the deceased’s house on Tuesday night.

Pappu Yadav raised suspicions that the case was not a natural death and called for a thorough probe by the district administration. “I think the post-mortem report will reveal what actually happened. I would want the district administration to do a thorough probe and find out what happened. Prima facie, I won’t call it natural death… it is a suspicious case," he told reporters.
