Authorities underlined the scourge of drug abuse among children and the imperatives of creating greater awareness about their negative effects.
Speaking at a review meeting of the district-level committee under Narco Coordination Centre here on Thursday, Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy said several measures have been initiated to curb drug and narcotic substances abuse among children, but before that children must be made aware of the harmful effects of the substances through village-level children’s meetings.
He said this was one way of curbing the demand for drugs as greater awareness about the negative impact will result in potential users eschewing substance use.
It was pointed out that the Police Department alone should ensure ban on drugs and called for coordination of different departments and staff. Mr. Reddy said awareness must be created in schools and colleges so as to bring down the demand to zero.
Superintendent of Police Vishnuvardhan said those who wish to file a complaint or provide information on drug abuse or substance use can do so, and the identity of such persons would be kept confidential.
A decision was taken to administer pledge in educational institutions on June 26 against the use of drugs and narcotics and raise awareness among the students.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Sundar Raj and officials from the Health Department were present at the meeting.
