A deepfake video featuring Rajya Sabha-nominated member Sudha Murty, who is also the founder-chairperson of Infosys Foundation, is widely being shared on social media, raising fresh concerns about cyber fraud and online impersonation.
The fabricated video falsely claims that Murty is promoting a high-return investment opportunity and urges viewers to click on a link for registration, which actually leads to a fake website designed to steal personal information.
In the video, Murty’s image and voice appear manipulated to create a realistic yet entirely fraudulent message.
In the fake video, she could be heard saying, “A number of investors have already joined and are earning from 10 lakh rupees per month. Unfortunately, we are now forced to stop the registration as our team is no longer able to handle the influx of new clients."
“All those who wish to join will have a chance to register only until the end of this day and only through the link that I will request to be placed below this video," the video shows her saying.
“If the link is still active and you are able to access it, congratulations, you still have the opportunity to become an investor," she says.
The fake website mimics legitimate platforms to make the scam appear credible. Once users enter their information, it can be misused for identity theft, phishing, and financial fraud.
In multiple such incidents, experts have emphasised the importance of cross-checking any investment opportunities, and have cautioned particularly against those that promise unusually high returns in a short period, as these are often indicators of fraudulent schemes.
