Over 18,000 vehicles shifted to the new Delhi-Dehradun highway during the Baghpat trial run, easing pressure on Delhi’s choking routes

Residents of Khajuri, Sonia Vihar, DLF Ankur Vihar, Ghaziabad, Baghpat, and Saharanpur are reporting major improvements in travel time and congestion.
New traffic figures from the Delhi-Dehradun highway show that this route is rapidly becoming the preferred alternative for avoiding Delhi’s chronic congestion. Data from 18,623 vehicles reveals that motorcycles form the largest category at over 42 per cent, closely followed by cars at around 45 per cent, indicating that light vehicles dominate this corridor. Buses and LCVs also appear in reasonable numbers, whilst heavy trucks and tractors are rarely seen.
Experts note that such traffic behaviour is crucial for setting speed limits, planning safety measures, and managing peak-hour flow. A heavy concentration of light vehicles tends to slow speeds during rush hours and increases the likelihood of choke points.
Trial Run Sparks A Major Shift
The biggest change appeared with the trial opening of the first phase up to Baghpat. As soon as it became operational, more than 18,000 vehicles per day shifted from Delhi to this new highway. This has eased pressure on East and North-East Delhi’s roads and has also helped reduce pollution levels.
Motorcyclists and car users have gained the most, adopting the highway in significant numbers. Residents of Khajuri, Sonia Vihar, DLF Ankur Vihar, Ghaziabad, Baghpat, and Saharanpur are reporting major improvements in travel time and congestion.
Within Uttar Pradesh, the highway is designed for speeds of up to 100 km/h. In Delhi, limits vary between 65 and 85 km/h, although these are temporary and permanent signage will be installed soon.
Construction Timeline And Inauguration
The foundation stone for the stretch from Akshardham Temple to Khekra was laid in January 2019 under the Bharatmala project. Construction began from Loni Border to Khekra EPE in 2021, and from Loni Border to Akshardham in 2022. The target was December 2025, and the work has been completed on schedule.
Due to the Delhi Assembly elections, the inauguration is now set for December 17, 2025, with PM Modi scheduled to open the entire project.
Delhi To Dehradun In Just 2.5 Hours
The section from Baghpat towards Dehradun is also progressing swiftly. Once the remaining phase is ready, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the full Delhi-Dehradun highway.
After this, the journey from Delhi to Dehradun that currently takes nearly six hours will reduce dramatically to just two and a half hours.
