With the draft of a new Electric Vehicle (EV) policy in New Delhi round the corner, India Today has learnt that the Rekha Gupta government is planning major relief for the middle class by offering substantial subsidies for vehicles shifting to electric mobility.

As per the draft EV policy, those who switch a two-wheeler from petrol to an electric vehicle can receive a subsidy of Rs 35,000 to Rs 40,000, government sources told India Today TV.

Commercial three-wheelers will also be given heavy subsidies if they move to EVs. In addition, petrol- or diesel-powered vehicles priced up to Rs 20 lakh will be eligible for subsidies if converted to electric vehicles, sources added.

According to Delhi government sources, the draft of the new policy is likely to be released by the first week of January.

The developments come as Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta recently chaired a meeting on pollution, which has since concluded.

"Today, the Chief Minister has sought responses from departments ranging from PWD to Transport, DPCC, Environment, and all others to discuss various aspects of pollution in Delhi... Many new things have come to light. Another meeting will be held on Thursday. Meaningful work will be done in the coming days," Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said.

Traffic congestion was discussed in detail, and consultations were held with various departments to ensure that congestion does not worsen at major hotspots across the city.

Sources said that during the meeting, the Chief Minister also discussed the possibility of cab aggregator companies Ola and Uber operating their private buses in the Delhi-NCR region.

As most commuters currently use taxis or private vehicles to reach offices, the government is exploring this option to reduce road congestion and the pollution caused by it.

The meeting also emphasised stricter enforcement of pollution norms. According to sources, the government wants a Rs 10,000 challan to be imposed on those without a valid PUC certificate.

While such challans are often reduced to Rs 100 through Lok Adalats, the government now aims to ensure greater compliance by enforcing the higher penalty.
